[COLOR=#708090]International interest in ABB technology at Hanover Fair
2007-04-19 - ABB‘s stand at Hanover Fair in Germany this week has been the focus of much interest, with a continual stream of visitors from all over the world. This morning a group of 10 Norwegian journalists was treated to a guided tour of the exhibits.
They provide an overview of the company‘s entire portfolio, from power products and systems to automation products, power automation and robotics. Klaus Treichel, head of communications for ABB Germany, began the tour of the stand with an introduction to ABB‘s energy efficient technologies.
As energy prices rise and business comes under pressure to reduce CO2 emissions, energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important to customers.
Of particular interest to the Norwegian journalists was a presentation about the benefits of ABB‘s HVDC （High-Voltage Direct Current） Light technology, which is providing energy-efficient power from the Norwegian mainland to the Troll A offshore natural gas platform 70 kilometers away in the North Sea.
A groundbreaking project
Norwegian oil company Statoil produces 100 million cubic meters of gas every day from Troll, meeting 10 percent of Europe‘s demand. ABB provided a Very High Voltage Motor and a state-of-the-art underwater HVDC Light cable link to the mainland grid which helps Troll draw power from Norway‘s abundant supplies of cheap and sustainable hydroelectric power.
The VHV motor replaces the rig‘s gas- or diesel-driven generators and not only saves space, but reduces Troll‘s emissions by some 230,000 tons of CO2 and 230 tons of NOx every year.
ABB‘s solutions have helped increase Troll‘s natural gas production by 25 million cubic meters per year, and attracted widespread interest.
The same ABB-patented, HVDC-Light technology can be used to connect off-shore wind farms to onshore grids, an application of particular importance in Europe since the EU‘s announcement that 20 percent of the continent‘s power demands must be met by renewable sources by 2020.
“We believe this is the only technology that can be used effectively to connect off-shore wind farms to the grid," said Jochen Kreusel, marketing and communications head of ABB‘s Power Technologies division in Germany.
HVDC Light is also an ideal technology for delivering power underground to urban areas where space and planning constraints make overhead cable delivery impractical, and for linking adjacent transmission networks to improve the security of electricity supplies.
Elsewhere in the stand, Andreas Keiger of ABB‘s Automation Products in Germany explained the broad range of applications for ABB‘s energy-saving motor drives. These devices are used to control the performance of motors in myriad appliances - from domestic washing machines and car park barriers to newspaper presses and industrial hoist systems.
Tailor-made efficiency
Tailoring a motor‘s speed to its application improves performance, reduces energy consumption and lengthens the machine‘s working life. A car park barrier without a drive to control its motor would not last long slamming up and down hundreds of times each day.
The highlight of the tour was a chance to play chess with ABB‘s miniature robots. The robots are vision-guided and equipped with “SafeMove” technology, a system that allows robots and humans to interact directly, minimizing the need for expensive and restricting safety barriers.
The robot carries out complex tasks like identifying and moving chess pieces while simultaneously watching its opponent, halting immediately if the human is too close.
Although this is an example of an ABB research project and will not be available as a product for some time, the applications will bring radical new manufacturing concepts to production lines. Powerful robots will be able to present heavy work pieces to human counterparts who can then perform tasks that are harder to automate. ABB is working with partners and end users to convert the technological advantages of SafeMove into cost savings for its customers‘ operations.
